Ito Shinsui

Japanese Shin-hanga printmaker

b.
1898
1972

Ito Shinsui was a prominent Japanese printmaker associated with the shin-hanga movement, which sought to revitalize traditional ukiyo-e art with modern sensibilities. Born in Tokyo, Shinsui began his artistic career as an apprentice in a printing shop and later studied under the painter Kiyokata Kaburagi. His works are characterized by their delicate lines, vibrant colors, and a focus on bijin-ga, or images of beautiful women. One of his notable prints, Before the Mirror (1916), exemplifies his skill in capturing the grace and elegance of his subjects. Shinsui's contributions to the shin-hanga movement were significant, and his works were exhibited internationally, including at the Toledo Museum of Art in the United States. His prints are held in high regard and are part of collections in institutions such as the British Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
