Czech landscape and still-life photographer
Josef Sudek was a Czech photographer known as the "Poet of Prague." After losing his right arm in World War I, he turned to photography, studying at the State School of Graphic Arts in Prague. Influenced by the pictorialist movement, his work is characterized by its evocative and contemplative nature.
Sudek's notable series, "The Window of My Studio," captures the changing seasons and light through his Prague atelier window, exemplifying his ability to find beauty in the mundane. His masterful use of natural light and shadow, along with meticulous composition, creates a meditative atmosphere.
Despite physical limitations, Sudek's dedication to photography was unwavering, often using heavy, large-format cameras. Though not widely recognized internationally until later in life, he is now celebrated as a significant 20th-century photographer. His work offers personal meditations on time and existence, influencing contemporary photographers and transforming the ordinary into the extraordinary.
