Mosaic is an ancient technique involving the assembly of small pieces of colored materials like stone, glass, or ceramic to create images or patterns. Originating in the 3rd millennium BCE in Mesopotamia, it was later refined by the Greeks and Romans. Roman mosaics are notable for their intricate designs and vibrant colors, often depicting mythological scenes and daily life.
The Byzantine era marked a significant period for mosaic art, characterized by the use of gold leaf and glass tesserae, creating shimmering effects in churches and basilicas. The Hagia Sophia in Istanbul exemplifies this mastery.
Mosaics are durable, with many ancient examples surviving today, offering insights into past cultures. Modern mosaics appear in contemporary art, public installations, and urban street art.
Creating a mosaic is labor-intensive and meditative, requiring precision and patience. Artists carefully select and place each tessera, often working from detailed sketches, resulting in visually stunning and timeless artworks.
