Korean-American video art pioneer
Nam June Paik is widely regarded as the father of video art. After fleeing Korea during the Korean War, he studied music and art history in Japan and Germany, becoming associated with the avant-garde Fluxus movement. Collaborations with John Cage and Karlheinz Stockhausen shaped his experimental approach.
Paik's innovative use of television sets and video technology in the 1960s marked a significant departure from traditional art forms. His piece TV Buddha (1974) juxtaposed a Buddha statue with a live video feed of itself, exploring themes of time and reflection. Electronic Superhighway: Continental U.S., Alaska, Hawaii (1995) used neon lights and video screens to comment on media and technology's influence in American culture.
Paik coined the term "electronic superhighway," prefiguring the internet's role in global communication. His collaborations with cellist Charlotte Moorman, such as TV Cello (1971), exemplify his innovative spirit and ability to blur art forms.
Paik's legacy includes pioneering works and theoretical contributions to media and technology in art. His influence persists in contemporary artists exploring the relationship between art, technology, and society.
