He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles, which later became part of the California Institute of the Arts. Nagel's career began in earnest when he started contributing illustrations to Playboy magazine in the early 1970s, where his work gained significant exposure.

Nagel's illustrations are marked by their use of bold lines, simplified forms, and a limited color palette, often focusing on the interplay between light and shadow.
