American Lowbrow painter and cartoonist
Robert L. Williams, commonly referred to as Robt. Williams, is a distinguished American artist known for his work as a painter and cartoonist, as well as the founder of Juxtapoz Art & Culture Magazine. Raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Williams' early fascination with drawing and automobiles shaped his artistic style, blending elements of California's car culture with apocalyptic and film noir themes. After studying at Los Angeles City College and the California Institute of the Arts, he began working with Ed "Big Daddy" Roth in 1965, a role that aligned with his passions.
Williams played a vital role in the creation of Zap Comix, contributing to the emergence of psychedelic imagery in art. His "Super Cartoon" paintings, crafted with the precision and technique of classical masters, are particularly noteworthy. In the 1980s, Williams connected with the punk rock scene, further diversifying his artistic reach. A leading figure in the lowbrow art movement, his vibrant and often provocative works have been exhibited globally and have inspired many contemporary artists. His published works, such as "The Lowbrow Art of Robt. Williams" and "Robert Williams: The Father Of Exponential Imagination," showcase his eclectic style, ranging from quantum mechanics to exploratory realism. Williams' innovative contributions continue to resonate in the world of modern visual art.
