South African visual activist and photographer
Zanele Muholi is a South African visual activist and photographer best known for her portraits of black lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex (LGBTI) individuals. Born in Umlazi, Durban, she studied at the Market Photo Workshop in Johannesburg.
Muholi's work challenges stereotypes and prejudices surrounding gender, sexuality, and race in South Africa and beyond. She has received numerous awards for her photography, including the Prince Claus Award, and her work has been exhibited in major museums and galleries around the world.
Interesting fact: in addition to her photographic work, Muholi is also a co-founder of the Forum for Empowerment of Women (FEW), a black lesbian feminist organization in South Africa. She has been an outspoken advocate for the rights of the LGBTI community and has worked to raise awareness of hate crimes and violence against LGBTI individuals in South Africa.
