Austrian illustrator
Alfred Kubin (1877–1959) was an Austrian graphic artist, illustrator, and writer, best known for his dark, fantastical works that often delved into psychological and existential themes. Born in Bohemia, Kubin studied at the Munich Academy and was heavily influenced by artists like Odilon Redon and Max Klinger. He gained recognition for his illustrations and lithographs, most notably for his series of drawings for Edgar Allan Poe's works and for his own illustrated novel, "Die Andere Seite" (The Other Side), published in 1909.
Kubin's art is characterized by its intricate line work, surreal imagery, and often unsettling subject matter. He explored themes of death, metamorphosis, and the subconscious, creating works that are both haunting and deeply introspective. Kubin was associated with the Expressionist and Symbolist movements and was a founding member of the Blaue Reiter (Blue Rider) group.
