American illustrator and art instructor
Andrew Loomis was an American illustrator, author, and art instructor born in 1892 in Syracuse, New York. He is best known for his work as a portrait illustrator and for his instructional books on illustration techniques. Loomis began his career as an illustrator for advertising agencies in the early 20th century, and his work appeared in a variety of magazines, including The Saturday Evening Post and Collier's. He gained recognition for his ability to capture the likeness and personality of his subjects in his portraits, which often featured prominent figures of the time.
In addition to his work as an illustrator, Loomis was also a highly respected art instructor. He taught at the American Academy of Art in Chicago, where he influenced a generation of illustrators. Loomis' instructional books, such as Fun with a Pencil, Figure Drawing for All It's Worth, and Creative Illustration, have become classic texts in the field of illustration and are still widely used by art students today. These books cover a range of topics, from basic drawing techniques to more advanced concepts such as perspective and composition.
Loomis passed away in 1959, but his legacy continues through his contributions to the field of illustration and art education. His work and teachings have had a lasting impact on the industry, and he is remembered as one of the great portrait illustrators and art instructors of the 20th century.
