French sculptor known for female nudes
Aristide Maillol (1861-1944) was a French sculptor, painter, and printmaker. Born in Banyuls-sur-Mer, Maillol began his career as a painter and tapestry designer before turning to sculpture in his late thirties. His work is characterized by a focus on the female form, with an emphasis on simplicity and purity of line. Maillol's sculptures often feature voluptuous, serene figures that are rooted in classical tradition, yet display a modern sensibility.
Maillol's most famous works include The Mediterranean, Venus with a Necklace, and The River, all of which exemplify his approach to sculpture. He was influenced by his contemporaries, such as Auguste Rodin, but Maillol's work eschews the dynamic movement and emotional intensity found in Rodin's sculptures in favor of a more tranquil and harmonious aesthetic.
Maillol's work was widely exhibited during his lifetime, and he received numerous commissions for public monuments. In addition to his sculptural work, Maillol also produced a significant body of graphic works, including woodcuts and lithographs. His work is held in major collections around the world, including the Musée d'Orsay in Paris and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Maillol's legacy is preserved at the Musée Maillol in Paris, which is dedicated to his work and houses many of his sculptures and drawings.
