American children's book author and illustrator
Arnold Lobel (1933-1987) was an American author and illustrator of children's books, best known for his Frog and Toad series. Born in Los Angeles, California, Lobel studied at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, where he graduated with a degree in fine arts. He began his career as a commercial artist but soon turned to children's book illustration. Lobel's work is characterized by its warm, detailed illustrations and gentle humor. His illustrations often feature anthropomorphic animals and are done in a range of media, including watercolor, ink, and colored pencil.
Lobel's Frog and Toad series, which includes four books published between 1970 and 1979, has been particularly celebrated for its depiction of the friendship between the two titular characters. The series has been translated into multiple languages and has won several awards, including a Caldecott Honor for Frog and Toad Are Friends. Lobel also wrote and illustrated other popular children's books, such as Mouse Soup and Owl at Home. In addition to his own writing, Lobel illustrated texts by other authors, including works by Adrianne Lobel, his wife, and Charlotte Zolotow.
Lobel's contributions to children's literature have been recognized with numerous honors, including the Garden State Children's Book Award and the Caldecott Medal. He was also a National Book Award finalist. Lobel's work continues to be beloved by children and adults alike, and his illustrations are considered classics of the genre. He passed away in 1987, but his legacy lives on through his enduringly popular books.
