French architect and pioneer of reinforced concrete construction
Auguste Perret (1874-1954) was a French architect and a pioneer of reinforced concrete construction. He was born in Ixelles, Belgium, and studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Perret's early work was influenced by his father, who was a stonemason and builder, and his two brothers, who were also architects. He established his own architectural firm with his brothers in 1905. Perret's use of reinforced concrete was innovative for the time and allowed for the creation of new architectural forms and structures. He is known for his use of classical elements in combination with modern materials, creating a unique style that was both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
One of Perret's most famous works is the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris, completed in 1913. This building is considered one of the first examples of Art Deco architecture and is notable for its reinforced concrete construction and elegant decorative details. Perret also designed the Church of Notre-Dame du Raincy (1922-1923), which is considered a masterpiece of modern religious architecture. The church's use of reinforced concrete allowed for large, open spaces and thin walls filled with stained glass, creating a light and airy interior.
Throughout his career, Perret contributed to the development of modern architecture and the use of new materials and construction methods. He was awarded the Royal Gold Medal by the Royal Institute of British Architects in 1948 and the AIA Gold Medal by the American Institute of Architects in 1952. Perret's legacy continues to influence architects and designers today, and his work remains an important part of architectural history.
