British studio potter and art teacher
Bernard Leach (1887-1979) was a British potter and designer, considered to be one of the most influential figures in the development of studio pottery. Born in Hong Kong and raised in Japan, Leach was exposed to a variety of artistic traditions from a young age. He studied at the Slade School of Fine Art in London before moving to Japan in 1909, where he worked as an etcher. It was in Japan that Leach first became interested in pottery, studying under Kenzan VI, a master potter of the Raku family. In 1920, Leach returned to England and established the Leach Pottery in St. Ives, Cornwall, with the help of Japanese potter Shoji Hamada. The pottery became a center for the production of functional stoneware, influenced by both Japanese and English ceramic traditions. Leach's work was characterized by its simplicity and focus on form and function. He wrote several influential books on pottery, including A Potter's Book and The Unknown Craftsman, which helped to spread his ideas about pottery and design. Leach's work was widely exhibited and collected, and he received numerous awards and honors throughout his career. He continued to work and teach until his death in 1979.
