American sculptor known for animal-inspired ceramic works
Beth Cavener is an American sculptor known for her large-scale ceramic sculptures of animals that explore human psychology and behavior. Born in 1972 in Pasadena, California, Cavener received her BA in Sculpture from Haverford College in 1995 and her MFA in Ceramics from Ohio State University in 2002. Her work often features animals in dynamic poses that appear to be caught in moments of tension or vulnerability, reflecting the complexities of human emotions and social interactions.
Cavener's sculptures are created using a labor-intensive process that involves hand-building with clay, then meticulously carving and shaping the forms before firing them in a kiln. She often uses a technique called "solid building," where the clay is added in layers and then hollowed out, allowing for greater detail and expression in her figures. Her work has been exhibited in solo and group shows at institutions such as the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, and the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art.
One of Cavener's notable works is The Sentimental Question, a sculpture of a pair of entwined rabbits that explores themes of intimacy and conflict. Another significant piece is Tangled Up in You, which depicts a pair of fighting hares and delves into the complexities of human relationships. Cavener has received numerous awards and grants for her work, including a Virginia A. Groot Foundation Grant and a Louis Comfort Tiffany Biennial Award. She currently lives and works in Montana.
