Swiss Academic painter
Charles Gleyre was a Swiss painter known for his contributions to the academic art tradition in the 19th century. He studied in Paris and Italy, where he was influenced by classical art and the works of the Renaissance. Gleyre's style is characterized by meticulous attention to detail and a preference for historical and mythological subjects. Among his notable works are Le Soir, Les Illusions Perdues, and Le Coucher de Sappho. He succeeded Paul Delaroche as the head of a prestigious art studio in Paris, where he taught several prominent artists, including Claude Monet and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. Gleyre's influence extended through his teaching and his participation in the Paris Salon, where his works were frequently exhibited.
