American performance and installation artist
Chris Burden was an American sculptor and installation artist known for his provocative and often controversial works that challenged the boundaries of art and performance. His early career was marked by performance pieces such as Shoot (1971), where he was shot in the arm by an assistant, exploring themes of danger and personal risk. Transitioning to large-scale installations and sculptures, Burden created works like Urban Light (2008), a permanent installation at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, consisting of 202 restored cast-iron street lamps. His work often incorporated elements of engineering and architecture, as seen in Metropolis II (2011), a kinetic sculpture featuring a complex network of roadways and toy cars. Burden's installations frequently engaged with themes of power, control, and the relationship between the individual and societal structures.
