American children's book illustrator
Elizabeth Shippen Green was an American illustrator known for her contributions to periodicals and children's books in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. She studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and later under Howard Pyle at the Drexel Institute. Green was one of the first female illustrators to gain prominence in a field dominated by men, and she became a regular contributor to Harper's Magazine. Her work is characterized by its detailed and delicate line work, often depicting domestic scenes and fairy tales. Notable works include illustrations for The Book of the Child and The Golden Age. Green was a member of the Philadelphia-based group known as the Red Rose Girls, alongside Jessie Willcox Smith and Violet Oakley, who shared a studio and collaborated on various projects. Her illustrations are celebrated for their narrative quality and technical precision.
