Al Hirschfeld
American caricaturist
Al Hirschfeld (1903-2003) was an American caricaturist best known for his black-and-white portraits of celebrities and Broadway stars. Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Hirschfeld moved to New York City where he studied at the Art Students League and quickly gained recognition for his unique style of caricature, which focused on capturing his subjects' personalities through simple, flowing lines.
Hirschfeld's work became synonymous with the world of theater, as his illustrations graced the pages of The New York Times and other publications for more than seven decades. His caricatures are characterized by their exaggerated features, minimalistic lines, and keen attention to detail, often incorporating his daughter's name, "Nina," as a hidden element within the drawings.
