Art Spiegelman
American cartoonist
Art Spiegelman (born 1948) is an American cartoonist, editor, and comics advocate, best known for his Pulitzer Prize-winning graphic novel "Maus." Born in Stockholm, Sweden, to Holocaust survivors, Spiegelman grew up in New York and studied cartooning and art. He gained prominence in the underground comix scene of the 1960s and '70s, contributing to various publications and co-founding the avant-garde comics magazine "RAW" with his wife, Françoise Mouly.
"Maus," first serialized in "RAW," is a groundbreaking work that recounts his father's experiences during the Holocaust, using anthropomorphic animals to represent different groups of people. The graphic novel received the Pulitzer Prize in 1992 and is considered a seminal work in the comics medium, elevating the status of graphic novels as a form of literature.
